Karl Trilogy - Special Offer This Week

This week we'll be offering you the chance to download the Kindle editions of each book for just 99p each from amazon.co.uk or 99c each from amazon.com , This is a 66% discount on books 1 & 2 and a 75% discount on book 3.

Karl's story began as a back story for a RPG character I played back in the late 1980s. 80,000 words later and I had only just scratched the surface of Karl's origin. This original story became the ground work for book one when a whole new original world was created to set the adventure in. From that point onwards a whole new adventure was born.

Paperback copies still exist and hopefully we'll be able to offer the last few sets online shortly.

A few hours later

After several weeks of staring at computers screens all day, every day,  my brain finally went flip this week and refused to start up one morning, a deep thudding resonated throughout my skull resulting in me having to take a day off.

Surfacing late in the afternoon I avoid the monitor screens and took a couple of hours of just sticking wood onto to cardboard, smearing PVA glue everywhere and then followed that up with some DAS putty crafted to look like stonework.

In other words, a little more finally got done on the stone archway project. Photos below.

Of course this is going to be a location setting from either the Karl trilogy, or maybe from the new work that is currently in progress...

Happy Birthday Karl

I know I haven't posted in a while, but as it's a special night...

Tonight would be our equivalent of Karl's birthday, their Witching Night when the folk of Miltonburg hide from what lurks in the shadows, and like today with our full moon, this is the night both moons are full...

It was one of only two nights of the year when both moons were full together.

Ulmar continued its natural progression through the sky having reached the period of its cycle where it was both full and beautiful.

Mauor, as well as being full, had a red haze cast around it. It shimmered in the sky over the town circled by what appeared to be a ring of blood red light. The face of the moon shone with a pale green glow and cast its shadows over the streets of Miltonburg, making the dark alleyways seem cold and threatening.

Miltonburg was quiet on this night; the streets were silent and empty. No one walked down Dock Road or around Salve Gardens. The inns and taverns were closed to visitors. No one, not even those that at other times of the year laughed at the thought of evil forces, dared to venture upon the streets on such as night as this. This was the night that the month of Panisslorn was named after, the night on which, legend said meant the death of a child. It celebrated the death of a Titan, one of the children of the gods. It was a night for sombre reflection and macabre fears.

Less Bangs but Bigger Bucks?

A November Update

(*) For a Who's Who see below.
You may have noticed that I’ve not got much in the way of model building done recently. That has something to do with the fact that I’m not only working with Tenth Planet Events signings and Doctor Who conventions these days but also Fantom Films as well. This has meant that I was at seven events over six weekends not leaving a lot of time for building work.  These are fun to do and if you’re into science fiction and fantasy, especially but not limited to Doctor Who then why not come along to an event. These are held in Barking, Chiswick, Newcastle, Peterborough, Slough and South London – so covering quite a few miles travelling as well.

Also, if you do come along and would like me to bring a set of Karl books for you then drop me a line, because then I can offer them a special event price. You can find the next event I’ll be at featured in the right hand rail of this site.

That’s not say that I didn’t take time to do my Dagenham walkabout following the national celebration of my brother’s birthday. Ok, so maybe November 5th has other significance as well which is why the fireworks are let off. It might have been because the date fell on a Thursday this year, that when I took the walk this year’s haul was incredibly small by comparison to previous years.  But before anyone starts to shout, I’m in total agreement that fireworks should be restricted, they do scare pets and wildlife and it is not fare on them at all, but whilst they are still sold I shall continue to round up what sticks I can to recycle into these buildings. All the frame work on the haunted house was built from the rocket sticks from the last couple of years.

Building work aside I am also dedicating a lot of time again to writing, working on the new project that has been in progress now for a year or so since Karl was completed.

There are currently two volumes planned to the new series of books – I’ve given some hints out in the past but not going to reveal too much at the moment, only to say that I was very excited by one of the figures in the recent Lego Minifigure series that was released, you might be able to guess why from this photo.

The Karl Axilion Trilogy Update

Back in September it was announced that the book arm of Berforts, Berforts Information Press, was put into administration. There are more details in the article on PrintWeek. Berforts were the publishers of the paperback edition of the Karl Axilion Trilogy.

At the moment I hold the remaining stock of the books, but once these have been sold there will not be another print run unless the books are republished by another publisher.

I shall continue to offer them for sale via the blogsite and at various conventions I attend while stock remains.

Once again, when they are gone, they may be gone forever. I can make no promises to future paperback editions being made available.

The Kindle editions are not affected and will continue to be offered via the various Amazon websites.

Gentle reminder

A gentle reminder, because I know how distracting things are. A chance to get something for nothing. As I write this, the competition to win Karl's mug ends in one week and one hour from now. Next Friday, at midnight, the competition closes and we will begin to verify the entries. Then with all the entries in the hat a winner will be drawn. You don't have to answer all the questions. There are three, so if you answer all three your name goes in three times, but just one correct answer gets your name into the draw.

So what have you got to lose?

A reminder of the three questions:

(1) What is the name of the business that is run by Karl’s father?

(2) Where and when does chapter eight of book two take place?

(3) Who was standing in the town square of Applegar at the beginning of chapter twenty-one in book three?

You can even find the answer to question 1 on this blog by viewing the preview of book one, chapter one.

Remember, email your answer(s) to: xxxxxxxx by midnight on the 31st July 2015 to be in with a chance.

Good luck

A Quick Update

A quick update on what I've been up to in case you thought I've been kidnapped by aliens.

I confess I have still not gone anywhere near the old haunted house model I was building last year, but during a frantic search for something a few weeks ago I came upon the missing plans for the building.

I have however been giving some love and attention to the Doctor Who Tapestry which has also been suffering from the time I spent last year working on the final part of Karl’s adventures.

I’ve gone back to listening to Big Finish albums and sticking the needle in and out of the canvas in the evenings to create a Draconian and a few Jelly Babies on the picture. I’m working on a Voc Class Robot at the moment.

That’s not to say that Karl is finished 100%.

The countdown to the official launch is underway. The Kindle edition goes live on the 23rd February, and pre-orders are already open. The final manuscript has been sent over, so why not pre-order and have them load it onto your machine on the day of release? Click here for more details.

I am now in the process of reformatting all three books ready for launch onto the other eBook platforms, so watch this space and Karl’s Facebook page for further announcements.

We have now added ‘Buy Now’ buttons to the pages on this blog dedicated to each book. You can order a copy direct from me, whilst my stock lasts, and I will sign and dedicate the book for you. Just follow the links on the right hand side of the blog for more details.

And finally congratulations to the two winners of the Goodreads Giveaway promotion for book one of the trilogy. Your books are in the post to you.

That’s my quick update for now, hopefully I will be back with some model work soon.

All the best
Derek

The story is nearly finished

We’re finalising the typeset pages, ensuring the full stops and page breaks are all in their right places. One last run through the text to ensure everything is right, and what a lot there is to read. It seems the way with fantasy novels they start out a reasonable size then explode by the time you reach the conclusion.

The final part of Karl will be with you shortly, and this time it is huge. It is approximately (2xBook2)+Book1 thick.

The question of splitting it did come up but although the story is in three parts it felt wrong to break it, there would not be a natural break halfway through part two. Plus although the cover price of number three has increased it is nowhere near as expensive had this book been split into two or even three parts. It was always going to be a trilogy and I’ve decided to keep it that way.

I knew number three was going to be longer since there was a lot to tell, so hence “Gerranthaul’s Story” found its way out of book three into book two. The first part of book three takes place parallel to Gerranthaul’s visit to Mishdine, and picks up where the main part of book two concluded – but that’s all I’m going to tell you for now.

I think the cover is brilliant and once again has that eerie feel to it, just like the mysterious forest on book one. This time we feature the Niton Mountains, where the legendary Demolich is said to be rising from. Many thanks to Rob Hammond for the wonderful work he has put into these covers.

Some of the promotional material arrived this week; this is always exciting when you unpack this. Here is a sample of the mugs and fridge magnets. Once again, as with the earlier paperback books ordered direct from me, they will be signed and will include a fridge magnet.

So watch this space for further updates – coming soon.

More details also available on the blog page here Karl – DemolichRising.

November Update

Just after Guy Fawkes Night I took another brief tour of the local streets gathering up some of the fallen sticks. It’s the night it rains building material from the sky.

Although there were far fewer bangs and flashes this year, which has to be a good thing for our fury friends.

But while they still go up and the sticks come down I’ll gather up what I can and recycle them into something that will last slightly longer than a quick flash and bang.

Here is this year’s haul, not as vast as I said as the previous gatherings, but hopefully enough to complete the model of the haunted house that has also taken a back seat.

The main reason for the tardiness with the building is the final instalment in Karl’s adventure. The final part of the trilogy is undergoing final preparations now for publishing.

Although it will not now make a November release I hope to see it published early in the New Year. Watch this place for an announcement quite soon.

There are several reasons that the manuscript for the final part has taken longer than expected, one of them is the size. In the style of many fantasy series it weighs in more than twice the second volume of the series.
