Doctor Who Tapestry - December Update

I'm not too sure how, but during December I appear to have been more productive on the tapestry, almost finishing Delta and adding a Navarino from that story. I worked on the Navarino over the Christmas period whilst away from home as this character was easier to work on than the final details of Delta or Gavrok.

When the Navarino is finished, along with any small outstanding details and a bit of background work I will be ready to join this panel on to the main tapestry, hopefully within the first couple of weeks of January 2023.

The first update of next year may show how the panels are joined on to the main body of work. This panel is part of the McCoy era and will be joining the other McCoy era panel going on just above the Ancient One and Light.

The work on the tapestry has taken priority for my spare time, so other crafting and model building took a backseat during 2022, and may well do so during 2023 as well. However I have been stocking up on the Doctor Who figures from Warlord Games since their Doctor Who licence expires at the end of 2022 so I want to ensure I have as many unique characters to paint later when I get the time. It's just a shame there were so many non-released packs that are only available if spend £75 and cannot be bought separately.

Doctor Who Tapestry - November Update

It feels as though I've had a lot less time to spend on the stitch work this month. Continuing to work backwards through the classic era, I've now reached Delta and the Bannermen. I've also reached the top of this canvas so the top of Gavrock's head will be stitched in across the join with the next panel that will be started some time next year.

After I finish Delta there will be just enough room for one more character to be added before I have to start joining this panel onto the main tapestry. With the size and weight of the main work that is going to be some task.

Doctor Who Tapestry - October Update

Prime Ministers come and Prime Ministers go, just glad I'm not trying to stitch the history of UK politics at the moment. So whilst we wait for the results of the next Parliamentary lottery results to come in I've updated Sylvester's first season to show the Dragon with the background completed and the prisoner the biomechanoid was guarding, the criminal Kane. However I've chosen to do Kane melting as he meets his end at the end of Dragonfire.

Gallery Pages Update - Tom Baker Years

If you look along the right panel list of pages you'll find that all Tom Baker seasons of Doctor Who now have their own gallery pages. There are a few adventures that still need representation but I'll get to them in time. (It's all relative.)

Karl Trilogy - Special Offer This Week

This week we'll be offering you the chance to download the Kindle editions of each book for just 99p each from amazon.co.uk or 99c each from amazon.com , This is a 66% discount on books 1 & 2 and a 75% discount on book 3.

Karl's story began as a back story for a RPG character I played back in the late 1980s. 80,000 words later and I had only just scratched the surface of Karl's origin. This original story became the ground work for book one when a whole new original world was created to set the adventure in. From that point onwards a whole new adventure was born.

Paperback copies still exist and hopefully we'll be able to offer the last few sets online shortly.

Doctor Who Tapestry - September Update

Having completed the Dragon from Dragonfire last month I did start work on a melting Kane to complement the biomechanoid, but knowing I was going to be out and about a bit I decided on tackling the background area instead as I wouldn't need to carry so much around.

For the background on this panel I'm using Twilley's wool which I'm splitting down and blending two different colours, usually a lighter and darker to get a mottled effect. It's also the same technique I use when stitching chain-mail or the crushed velvet of Helen A's top.

Doctor Who Tapestry - Off the hoop

So today I had to take the hoop that holds the aida taught whilst working in order to make another repair to the hoop, which has been seen better days. It's more designed for cross-stitch rather than tapestry, I found the tapestry frame somewhat impractical as you have to stitch the whole canvas onto it, not something I could do when joining panels to the main body either. This hoop is a much thicker hoop, I've not seen any like it recently so it is a case of make-do-and-mend.

It gave me the opportunity to take a photo of the current panel, and also finish the back edging along the right hand side that will eventually become the outside edge of the main body when this is attached.

Doctor Who Tapestry - August Dragons

Quick early August update now that the Dragon has practically been completed on the tapestry and I'm moving on to tackle another from Dragonfire...

Doctor Who Tapestry - July Update

July has been a slow month for the tapestry. Roughly I had been completing a character a month until now. With all the heat it's been hard to stitch, holding the material close has been like holding a woolly jumper up close. I've managed to complete about the Dragon from Dragonfire.

Doctor Who Tapestry - June Update

June has seen me continuing May's colour scheme - mainly in shades of white and gold, as I contained the 1988 story Remembrance of the Daleks.

It's taken all but the last couple of days of June to add the Emperor Dalek / Davros alongside the Special Weapons Dalek.

Initial sketch on the aida

but what's next?

Doctor Who Tapestry - May Update

May has seen me working mainly in shades of white and gold, as I added the Special Weapons Dalek from the 1988 story Remembrance of the Daleks

And I'll be sticking with these colours whilst tackling the Emperor Dalek version of Davros that also graced this adventure.

Doctor Who Tapestry - April Update

A quick post to update on the latest progress of the tapestry, but to start with I twittered and posted on Instagram at the start of the month that I had unpicked the tapestry to start again...

Of course it was just an April Fool joke, there was no way I could have unpicked the whole thing in one night.

Meanwhile update on actual progress.

So with the following initial colour palette selected.

I set to work to stitch the Bus Conductor, also from The Greatest Show in the Galaxy.

Then when I had finished with him I moved on to a different story, still sticking with the Sylvester McCoy era, this time I headed off to Terra Alpha for The Happiness Patrol. The Kandyman is already on the tapestry but with the colour selection of...

Let's just say, I hope that you're happy Helen A?

And next with the colour selection...

I wonder who this might be?

Doctor Who Tapestry - Battle On 2

As February draws to a close I'm pleased to say I have completed Ancelyn now on the tapestry.

I'm pleased with how he has come out, I'll be honest there was a period about half way when I felt he wasn't going right. This often happens during the work, and it's not until the eyes are finished, usually one of the last parts I do, and the final details are stitched in that the final effect is achieved.

This means we now have five characters on this current working panel all from two Sylvester McCoy stories, "The Greatest Show in the Galaxy" and "Battlefield".

The next character is again from the first story mentioned, after this I'll be moving on to another McCoy story, but until then I'll be stitching....

"Any more fares please?...."

Doctor Who Tapestry - Battle on

Following on from the January update post showing Mordred I have now completed the work on his mother the immortal Morgaine.

Yesterday I tweeted this was the colour scheme in use this weekend, this is mainly armour and sword colours that I’m using for Ancelyn.

I start with a rough sketch and begin filling in the shading. As work progresses slight rework is done on the sketch as I go, as you can see where the sword has moved slightly. Sometimes this is the result of how stitching doesn’t always look right when trying to follow the original sketch.

And finally I'm starting Ancelyn's hair, here's the colour range I've sorted to start with.

Doctor Who Tapestry - January Update

The last few weekends have been given over mainly to work on the tapestry, having started to compile the galleries by season and working out just how many additional characters and stories I want to include means I have to give as much spare time to this as possible.

I’ve just finished Mordred, next I need to complete work on Morgaine, both from Battlefield. I’m also intending to add Ancelyn to complete King Arthur trio of characters that appeared in the story. If you’re wondering about Brigadier Bambera, you will find her on the special panel dedicated to UNIT alongside Leithbridge-Stewart and co.

Also this weekend I released the first two gallery pages based upon my audit of ensuring each story from the classic era is represented. The gallery pages cover the first two Pertwee seasons, Season 7 and Season 8. You can find them by selecting the Adventures with the 3rd Doctor page on the navigation bar.

The Mind of Evil is in need of representation, any suggestions on who or what would be good to include specific to this story?

I’m off to do some more stitching…

The Story of the Doctor Who Tapestry (Part Four)

I often get asked the same questions regarding the tapestry: When did you start it? How long have you been doing it? It’s not actually that easy to answer because it has not been a continuous activity. But let me wind the clock back and try to provide some answers. (Parts One, Two & Three here)

Of Time Lords and Twilleys

Anchor, old and new larger skeins

Another of the questions that I get asked is about what sort of wool I use: Will any wool do? Well, chunky knit certainly won’t. Working on the project over the years I have used mainly three brands, initially when I first started it was Anchor tapestry wool, it was this brand of wool than mum first used when she did her first tapestry kit that I mentioned in part one

Twilleys stranded, good to split down

I had a basic range of colours and you will notice in the earlier work that there is much less detail and less shading. An area was filled with orange if that was the main colour because I would have had one skein. There was a small wool shop local to me that stocked tapestry wool but it wasn’t Anchor it was Twilley’s. They were also being sold off, so I started to stock up, although the colours were mainly purple, mauve and khaki green. I had to find a way to use this wool.

Time Lord panel with Morbius, the Monk, Omega, the Dark Tower, three Masters, Melkur, The Rani & Rassilon

This is why the Time Lord section that came next has the border around it. I made a hard edge, meaning no need to blend backgrounds but also allowed me to use the cheaper wool I had bought.

I discovered that Twilleys wool has some advantages over other brands. First the skeins are larger, (although I later found larger skeins of anchor too) they are pre-cut lengths but they also unravel a lot easier. They are three strands that can be untwisted to make the wool thinner for some applications but it also means you can then use different colour threads together. The one disadvantage was their more limited colour range, far less shades than Anchor or DMC.

Stitching with two colour threads for chain mail effect

This helps a lot when you are stitching something that needs a mottled look or for chain mail. It is much harder to split the other brands.

DMC added to the mix

Roll forward a few years and I started to add DMC to the mix too. I don’t see any disadvantage in mixing the brands, in fact it helps me blend colours now and shade. Using the tighter Aida than I first started with and having access to so many shades means I’m a lot happier with the later work but also makes me less keen to show the earlier parts.

When I said I had access to all shades, I now have an entire cupboard full of boxes of wool since I bought up all the stock from the local Hobbycraft when they sold it off at 80% discount when they stopped selling tapestry skeins. Later I was again very fortunate in 2019 when a local charity shop had a few cases donated; they were initially bagging them up a few at a time and selling them. The poor staff believed they would be bagging up these skeins for life and would never see the back of them - but when I bought all they had on display they almost jokingly said at first, "Would want to buy the lot?" Well, no joke, a deal was struck and there were smiles all round. I mentioned this back in 2019

4 of the 5 cases of Anchor wool from the charity shop

I think I now have almost enough wool to finish this project and maybe the New Who one, should I live that long. I do still need to top up from time to time, usually black and white but it is harder to find suppliers, this seems to be a dying craft.

Next time I’ll talk about how I started to tackle the "Wilderness Years" and then the coming of the Eighth Doctor.

Celebrating Season 17 boxset across the tapestry

To celebrate the release of the Doctor Who Season 17 boxset last year, which I have almost finished watching, here are the sections of the tapestry where Season 17 stories are represented. Well, all but one. I appear to be missing "The Creature from the Pit". I am so looking forwarding to adding a green phallus to the tapestry.

The majority of the characters stitched here were done quite early on during the expansion of the tapestry and are not as detailed as later work like the Ancient One from McCoy’s "Curse of Fenric". In some cases I think I will revisit a couple of these and try to improve them before declaring the whole project complete.

Season 17 opened with "Destiny of the Daleks". Here are Davros and a Movellan. I’m pleased with Davros but the Movellan could do with some extra detail. (1st Sept 1979 – 22nd Sep 1979)

The second story for Season 17 was "City of Death". (29th Sep 1979 – 20th Oct 1979). Here is Scaroth, last of the Jagaroth. Someone has suggested I add the Mona Lisa. Hmm not sure about that.

Next up was "The Creature from the Pit" (27th Oct 1979 – 17th Nov  1979) This is the one that is currently not represented. But it will, eventually.

Following on was "Nightmare of Eden" (24th Nov 1979 – 15th Dec 1979) Here I have a Mandrell, also an early effort and in need of additional work to bring it up to the current standard.

Prematurely concluding the season at the time was "The Horns of Nimon" (22nd Dec 1979 – 12th Jan 1980).

The last story of the season, never finished at the time because of a strike at the BBC and subsequently released with the missing scenes animated, was "Shada". This is a far more recent effort and has much more detail for Professor Chronotis, the sphere and a Krarg.
